bin laden

Everyone I'm sure has heard about the killing of Bin Laden. He was the leader of Al Qaeda. So he was pretty much a nationally known major gang leader.
I think that it's a very great thing that we took him down. Al Qaeda is going to retailiate some day some how against the United States. Obama is confidant that we will take Al Qaeda down as well. I think there will be many wars back and forth before there is an end to it all, if there ever is an end.

MOTHERS DAY

Everybody should celebrate mothers day! Make you childrens mother feel special and of course your own mother!
Women and men I think have different views/opinions on how to celebrate mothers day. As women, we recognize and appreciate our mother, our grandmother, aunts, sisters, cousins, if you are a mom we show love! Most men i've talked with about how they celebrate mothers day, is they specifically focus on their mother alone. There's nothing wrong with that of course, It's just one of those things where men and women differ (and they usually don't understand why we celebrate mothers other than our own haha).

I love this quote I retrieved from this website. It says "Contrary to popular belief, Mothers Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark" hahaha!

Just a briefing on this history of Mothers Day:

The daughter of Anna Jarvis, also named Anna, started celebrating mothers day after her mother had passed away. Mothers day used to be celebrated by going to church. Anna would hand out her mothers favorite flower, the carnation. Mothers day was officially made a holiday in 1914. From there on out it turned into a big money making ordeal.

I thought this was an interesting statistic: Mothers day is apparently the biggest day for long distance phone calls.

The men in my family don't really think outside the box, as far as gifts or being original goes. My dad buys his mother and my mothers mother flowers, and we always take my mom out to eat for Mothers Day.

Here are some other ideas of how to celebrate Mothers Day: There's the classic breakfast in bed, flowers, chocolate, jewelry ;), there's always arts and crafts for the kids. My sister's favorite hobby is to sew and I found this cute little Aligator Sewing Kit for kids to make for a Mothers Day gift, I'm going to help my daughter make that for her. I'll share the link: http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/alligator-sewing-kit-660573/

There are tons of other things you can do for a mother, like yard work! Putting together a gift basket filled with her favorite wine and books, or send her to the spa (ahem! send me to the spa!), taking her to get her nails done.

If this was a perfect world, I'd want my husband (which I dont have, im single!!)  to wake me up with the room filled with flowers (although flowers are nice, they die, and what would you do with a room full of flowers anyway??) and breakfast in bed, followed by dumping me off at the spa for most of the day, and a trip to the mall of course, then a romantic night on the town. :) Since this is just in my perfect world cenario, let's throw in a lemo and chouffer for the day, a bag holder for the mall, and of course jewlry. Okay this is starting to sound too much like my perfect birthday cenario. HAHAHA Maybe this is why im single?? My daddy spoiled me ..

Don't forget Mother's Day is THIS SUNDAY!! Do something special for yo mamma! Remember, FATHERS DAY is around the corner ;)

The final sentecing for the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard..!

If you haven't been following this story from the begining, this is what happend!
Jaycee Dugard was 11 years old, waiting for her school bus to pick her up, a block away from home. She was kidnapped by sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. They held her captive for 18 years in tents and sheds outside their Califorina home. During that time, Jaycee birthed 2 of Phillip Garrido's children.

Just reading about this abduction makes me know FOR SURE that my daughter will NEVER be riding a bus to school! I know the chances of something actually happening are slim, but oh yeahh, I don't care. Im not even going to risk it.

These people must have really jacked this girl up in the head. I don't understand why she was there after 18 years. She was 29 when it got found out. ????? It just goes to show how psyhcotic Phillip and Nancy Garrido really are, to manipulate an innocent little girl like that her whole life, and then some.

The thought of Phillip Garrido raping that little girl and her having 2 of his kids, it just makes me sick. He deserves more than life in prison! He should have to live in a torcher chamber of some kind. With every mother of a little girl controlling what goes on! Still I don't think after all that he would be even close to paying back Jaycee the emotional or mental damage he has caused.

My prayer is that Jaycee finds hope, peace, and joy. I wish I could hug on her!!

online vs campus

Online schooling vs. on campus schooling is a personal descion you must make yourself. Depending on your lifestyle and finacial aid status is how you would determine which schooling is best for you. Obviously we are all taking this course online, so we have one thing in common. This semester I am taking 4 online classes and 1 on campus class.

Online school can offer a couple of benefits, such as, If you have work hours that contrast with school hours, if you have anxiety about attending on campus classes, if you have young children whom you want to stay at home with, if you just don't feel like getting dressed or want to go at your own pace.

These days, especially in big cities, stores are open 24- hours, demanding people to work crazy hours which don't allow time for school during the day, therefore people who work crazy hours would benefit from online schooling.

7% of college students at UCLA reported having anxiety attacks the first year of college. Thus, people with anxiety attacks are more likely to take advantage of the online schooling.

A big majority of people in college also have children. Sometimes people want their children home with them but they also desire going to college, That's when online schooling comes in handy.

Let's face it, a lot of people are lazy and want to do their schooling in their pj's. If you dont have upper division classes that require lab, and can stay at home and do that, then more power to you.

On campus schooling requires more social effort, but there are benefits. Sometimes going back to college can seem scary, or even being a freshman might be scary for you, but once you get through your first day you will be proud of yourself. On Campus college is actually a lot of fun. Meeting people and joining groups and clubs is self fullfilling because interacting with people and discussing issues and learning with people is important for social growth. Learning how to be social is a very important tool for success. If you do have a fear of being on campus, the best way to get over it is to just face your fear and take a class. You will learn that you love being on campus.

Going to college on campus is beneficial for another reason because you will get some exercise walking all over the place. Burning calories is a good thing!

I personally perfer on campus rather than online, because I like meeting new people and feeling like im apart of something. Also I tend to do better with my homework when I have to go to class. When checking to see what homework you have for the week is up to you, it's a lot easier to just not look at your agenda then to actually miss an on campus class.

You can decide what works best for you. If you struggle with social anxiety, just give on campus school a try. Everybody is working for the same goal as you, so don't feel intimidated!!

recycling

We've all heard it! "Reduce, reuse, recycle" is a phrase people use when talking about recycling. Reduce- means that you're saving trees, the word is challenging you to eliminate overusage of products. Reuse- means if you have a plastic cup to drink out of, save it and wash it out to reuse it. You can reuse almost anything. Recycle- means to be remade again or to use again.

Recycling has been around for ever, whether it was intentional or not. Back when materials weren't so available for everyone, they would use very little of what they could get and scrap their leftovers and use them for other things. Historic recycling dates back to 400 BC. Scientists have evidence of recycling in ancient times in Turkey and Rome. In the Industrial times recycling basically only happend in times of poverty and war. For the most part they only recycled when they needed to. During Wolrd War 2 was when recycling really took hold of America because people were forced to ration everything they could buy even including food. After World War 2, recycling was off again until the 70's when the enviromental movement really started to shape our country. The enviromental movement is all about reduce, reuse, recycle.

Currently America is making major steps to "go green". Instead of using paper checks, companies are handing out plastic debit cards with their earnings on them. They are also doing things like using recycled paper for napkins and other types of paper. Basically, anything that can be recycled will be. It saves money, it saves trees from being cut down and destroying animals homes.

You know you deserve it!!

Is life a little hectic at times? Well of course it is! We have school, kids, work, and situations in our lives that put stress on us every minute of every day. How do you handle stress? What are ways you de-stressify yourself? Everyone is different and prefers many different techniques to relieve stress.

Any situation can bring stress to your life in some way, shape, or form. The first area of stress that comes to mind is at work. Popular ways to resolve work stress is 1. Working out and keeping a balanced mind set and emotional well-being, 2. Try avoiding negative people, 3. Learning better communication skills so you feel more comfortable amongst co-workers, getting enough sleep, time management,

Signs that you're stressed on the job include but are not limited to: fear of layoffs, being short staffed, meeting crazy expectations, pressure to work at optimum levels all the time.

Another area in life that's stressful is your kids. Nobody's kids are perfect little angles and parents aren't perfect either. Sometimes people are worked up over money or relationships and take it out on their kids by snapping at them and God forbid, hitting them. There is a lot of ways to help you overcome these sorts of issues. Here are 12 ways to prevent yourself from lashing out at your child:
1. "Take a deep breath..and another. Then remember you are the adult"
2. "Close your eyes and imagine you're hearing what your child is about to hear"
3. "Press your lips together and count to 10.. better yet 20"
4. "Put your child in a time out chair. Remeber this rule: 1 minute for every year of their age"
5. "Put yourself in a time out chair. Think about why you are angry. Is it your child, or is your child a convientient target for your anger"
6. "Phone a friend"
7. "Go outside and take a walk"
8. "Take a hot bath or splash cold water on your face"
9. "Hug a pillow"
10. "Turn on some music, maybe even sing along"
11. "Pick up a pencil and write down as many helpful words as you can think of. Save the list"
12. Call a hotline.

The next stressful thing on the list is being in labor. Yep, I went there! The bottom line here is, the only way you're going to be relieved of this stress is by having the baby. But in the meantime here are a few ways to cope: Yoga, Deep breathing, massage, Enough sleep, walk, clean ;), Sleep (ya, I said it twice!), and make sure you plan things so they don't creep up on you.

Those are just a few things in life that can bring you stress, my advice is take care of yourself and be a positive person.

Death is in the air

So far this month I know of 2 people that have died. The first person is my friends little brother who is 22ish. He was walking down by Flyin J and got ran over by a truck driver. The truck driver didn't stop until they reached their destination in Tulsa, OK. They unloaded their truck and then called authorites to report they hit something back in Joplin but didn't know what it was. HMMMM. This is all kinds of messed up. First of all, the guy was walking 4 feet away from the road, this is around 9am, so it was daylight, and the truck driver didn't stop to see what they hit, they kept driving until TULSA?! They said the truck was full of drugs, that's why they waited to unload it to call it in, and the only reason they called it in was because it was on camera and they would have been found out anyway. How sad.... So many people are affected by this loss. I hope the truck driver gets what's comin to them!!

The second death is a guy my dad used to work with in KC. Apparently he killed himself. He had a family and everything and he was 47. My dad said it was the last person he'd ever expect to kill themselves.

Here are some suicide statistics:

Number of suicides in 2001: 30,622
88 people die from suicide each day in the U.S.
Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death amoung college students

i Hate dream crushers

If I could persuade someone to do anything, it would be to better their life. There are so many lost teens that have no parental direction or any positive role models. I work with a girl who im quite concerned about, and I love her to death, but I don't know how to get through to her. She is doing what the "typical Joplin" teenager does, which is get high and not care about their future.

Growing up in Kansas City, my friends attitudes toward life was and still is Reach for the stars and don't stop until you make it. Im so used to that way of thinking, that when I moved to Joplin everyones perspective on life and their future is completely different, it's sad! I've met so many people who say, for instance, this girl on campus told me she wanted to take Spanish but she didn't think she could do it. ??? Whhhat..? She's not the only person to say things like this, but I know people who just don't believe in their self so they don't try to further their education. This kind of mentallity is coming from highschool honor roll teenagers who end up working minimum wage their whole life and not pursuing dreams.

What causes this type of attitude and how can we change it? Personally I'm trying to be a positive role model for classmates, co-workers, family, and friends. One thing I know i'm good at doing is listening to someone talk about their life and problems they face and I usually have good advice to give. I should really listen to my own advice! I think what causes this type of attitude, where you down yourself all the time, is being raised a certain way. If it's not how your raised then its the community you live in or someone along the way had to drill in your mind that your life isn't worth giving it your all and chasing your dreams. Or maybe it's just the opposite, maybe nobody ever told them that they are worth something and can achieve greatness if they applied themselves.

To prove I am actually trying to help better other people's lives, I will tell you a little secret. First of all though, I don't think im better than anyone, and i'm not judging anyone. With that said, this semester I picked up my first "project" is what I call it. I met this girl on campus that really desparetly needed someone to teach her some class, or hygeine, or IDK the girl was just screaming for help. For some reason, the first day of class I was drawn to this girl, who I could smell 2 feet away. Every day I see her I just let her talk and get to know her and try to understand where she's coming from, what's her background, and what areas in life I could help her with, and I sit with her every chance I get. She needs to know that she is important and beautiful. Sadly, she is one who thinks so negativly of her self. When I throw advice her way she chucks it and makes up some lame excuse why her situation "can't" be fixed.

Point is, be a positive role model for someone who needs it.

ONLY IN THE MIDWEST..!

There is an article I read about this 18 year old girl named Jasmine Cotter, from Oklahoma, who got in a fight with her boyfriend of 3 years and ran him over and drove off, on top of that she is not getting a significant jail sentence! In the article it says she was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. Also, I watched a clip of the father of the guy she ran over. In court he asked the judge to have a light sentence on her and said that he forgave her and he didn't even sound sad that his son was murdered by this girl and he acted like he liked the girl. Something smells FISHY! I believe in God with all my heart but if someone ever intentionally ran over my daughter, you better believe they'd be locked up for a long time. I mean honestly, something is wrong with a person who just runs their boyfriend over, they SHOULD be locked up, hello! What if they do it again! I think the guys father got paid off or something. CRAZINESS IN THE MIDWEST,GO FIGURE!!

Learning to read is important!

Reading is the foundation for the majority of our society. It's important to read to your children and start at a young age. When you read to your kids it forms a special bond between you that you will cherish forever. Many personality traits can be developed from reading such as confidence, a mature vocabulary, comprehension, reading inspires you to learn more and be more involved in acedemics.

It's important to start reading to your children at an early age. Typically people learn to read before, during, or around preschool. Reading starts in the home. If you read to your child every night they start to look forward to it and get excited about books and stories, and it opens their imagination. Reading is so important in schools that they have library time and they learn how to check out books, and learn all about things like the Dewey Decimal System. Once they're in school they have circle time and teachers read to the students, and then as they begin to read they start checking out books with less pictures and eventually start reading chapter books, and they have rewards in school for good reading.

Reading is so important for youngsters for many reasons, but one strong characteristic they obtain from reading is confidence. When a child is able to read comfortably in class it releases any fear of being made fun of, and makes them feel like a leader, inturn making them want to read more, learn more, be an A student. Kids will carry that confidence into other subjects and it will show as a prime personality trait throughout school and also adulthood.

The more you read the better at it you'll get and the better at it you are the more you'll love it. Once you have a love for reading you will feel comfortable to read a variety of material. Your vocabulary will increase with more variety and you will develop a mature vocabulary. Having a mature vocabulary makes it easy and less stressful to be social and gives you confidence in interviews or just with people in general.

Like I said before, the more you read the better at it you will get. Learning to read is like learning to ride a bicycle. You're going to be slow and stumble a lot in the begining, you might even crash, but the more times you get back up and keep going the better you will get and eventually you will be riding in races. It's important to teach kids how to read when they are young because you want them to do great in school and have confidence and have the desire to learn more all the time.

fad diets vs lifestyle change

A Diet is when you restrict your food intake (or a particular food ). At any given time half of the women in the U.S. are on a diet. You can find hundreds, probably thousands of diets in the world. People go on diets for either health reasons or they are trying to lose weight fast. Fad diets promise fast weight loss and a perfect body usually without working out and a lot of the time they just have you cut calories. Sometimes diets even have products to buy, like fiber bars, drinks, and frozen dinners. Only 5 percent of dieters will keep the weight off that they lost. People from the very beginning of dieting time have focused on everything except for the food you’re putting in your body. In the late 1800’s is when the first diet aids appeared. The ingredients in them consisted of laxatives, purgatives, arsenic, strychnine, washing soda, and Epsom salts. Obviously those aren’t trending diets today. The top five diets of 2011 include: 1) the HCG diet; on this diet you get injected with hormones that pregnant women have which supposedly burn fat fast. I personally know a couple people doing this and they say they can’t work out on it and also they were told to restrict their caloric intake to 500 calories a day. 2) the Atkins diet; basically limits your carb intake. 3) the South Beach diet; it’s supposed to be a healthier version of the Atkins diet and it’s for people with heart problems. 4) the Mediterranean diet; this diet you eat lots of veggies, drink red wine, use olive oil (I just saw a new whipped olive oil spread at Wal-Mart, ha I actually bought it! ), and eat meat sparingly. 5) Low Carb Diet; it’s name says it all.

A lifestyle change is different from a diet because it’s a long term, slow, process that consists of your overall lifestyle and how you eat and why you eat, also exercise becomes apart of your daily routine. This is where terms like “slow and steady wins the face” or “Success is a steady process toward one’s personal goals”( -Jim Rohn) come in place. A good friend once told me that life is like a big rock climb. It’s slow and steady, and sometimes you have to take out rocks in order to place for your hands or feet. When we take bad habits out of our lifestyle we should replace them with a good habit. Don’t wait on someone to take your hand and help you, as harsh as that sounds, you can make a lifestyle change on your own! Be strong. Stay positive and keep a clear mind. Make rules for your life and stand by them. Some of my own rules include no fast food, the only beverages I consume is water, soy milk, and occasionally cranberry juice and sometimes red wine, no dressings or condiments, plain ol nasty oatmeal for breakfast, and then I eat every couple hours. I’m 100% imperfect though I promise!! I’m still a working progress. That however is another blog! ;)
p.s. The links down below are quite amusing you should take a peak :)

Walgreens.

My daughter is sick yet again! Everyone at her school now has strep, so of course she had to be a team player! Her doctors office is about 10 miles, maybe a little more, from where we live. So I took Lorelai to the doctors appointment and they said they would fax her antibiotics over to Walgreens on 20th and Main. We drive directly over to Walgreens, come to find out that they haven't faxed her prescription over yet. The woman working in the pharmacy told me to just stick around and it should be faxed shortly and she would call me back as soon as she got it. We walked around walgreens for about an hour before I decided I needed to call her doctors office and ask them what the hold up was. After being on hold for 10 minutes the nurse said she'd fax it right over. I waited at Walgreens for 15 more minutes than got so bored I drove 4 blocks over to my sisters. In the meantime, I observed my friend fix the motorcycle that had caught on fire. I called walgreens, still no prescription, called the doctor and they said they'd fax it. At that point I decided I would drive back to Carl Junction and eat dinner and then drive back to Joplin later. My niece and my daughter have the same docter and this has happened with my sister before. So finally, hours later, I got a text from Walgreens notifying me of the prescription being ready for pick up. I hop in the car and drive back out to Joplin and finally get my daughter started on her antibiotics at like 10pm! There is a Walgreens on every corner now in Joplin. Would it hurt to put just one in Carl Junction?? I'm sure it would benifit the town. Aside from giving the locals a break from driving all the way to Joplin just to go to Walgreens, it would open employment opportunities, it would be a money maker. Other little towns in the area would enjoy it as well. Joplin currently has 3 Walgreens and counting! Every time I go in to town I see a new one being put up! It's the same thing with Walmart. I just wish Carl Junction had a Walgreens!!! It would make life so much easier.

Lindsay Lohan drrrammaa

Lindsay Lohan is a famous actress from california. She is 25 years old. I am 2 years younger than her, so I grew up watching all of her movies. I always thought she would turn out okay, and then one year she got hit big with with a DUI and a cocaine possession. So instead of jail time she checks herself into rehab for 45 days. Not even 2 weeks after getting out of rehab and she is arrested for another DUI and the cops found cocaine in her pockets, and she told the police that the pants weren't hers. She gets back into rehab to buy time and stays there for three months. Following rehab at her court date the Judge sentenced her to one whole day in jail (seriously), 10 days of community service, 3 years probation, and an 18 month alcohol education program. The girl didn't even spend 2 hours in jail for that! After that incident, she stole an $11,000 coat when she was at a private party. She ended up returning it so there were no charges filed. Then in 2008 she stole $400,000 of Dior jewlery that she wore on a photo shoot, and again, no charges were made. In 2010 she missed a court date because she was apparently stuck in France with a stole passport. She ended up paying $100,000 bond so she wouldn't be arrested. The judge demanded that Lindsay wear a court issued alcohol monitoring device which set off when she was at the MTV Movie Award's after party. Then she goes back to court, the judge gives her 90 days in jail, she ended up serving 2 weeks, and 90 days in rehab, which she only served 23 days of. She then fails a drug test and was supposed to go back to rehab for 90 days. Now the most recent buzz about the actress is that she stole a one of a kind necklace from a jewlery store. Her lawyers are trying to get her a plea deal with no jail time. Let's be real for minute. WHAT!!! She either has some tight connections or the courts just count on her to keep messing up to make money off of her. My question is, if she is court ordered to be in rehab, how does she get out early? Does she get kicked out? Does she pay them? Who knows! She clearly needs some kind of help. I don't think rehab would do much for her though I think she uses it to make it look like she's at least trying to get better but really she's not. I think she needs a dramatic life change, she needs God in her life. She can obviously play the system so to speak. I don't think it's right for her to be able to get out of trouble just because she has money. Obviously the courts don't care about her so they just charge her money, and she's figured out that if she pays money she can get away with anything. Her crimes have went from DUI's and Cocaine to stealing irreplacable jewlery. Crime seems to be a rush for her. She needs to wake up and smell reality before her crimes start hurting people.

Weekend

My Crazy Busy Weekend

My weekend starts tonight because it’s Friday. I am currently trying to get all of my homework finished by tonight, obviously this paper specifically because it’s due in 20 minutes. However I do have other homework. My classes don’t really go well this semester. I have Spanish 101, Sociology 101, Biology 100, Math, and of course my favorite class ENGLISH. Let me just say, Spanish is very hard to learn doing online classes! I don’t think I’m doing too hot in that class. This last weekend I pretty much screwed myself on grades. I was busy studying for a big Spanish test and completely forgot about sociology, and then I also seemed to forget about a Spanish assignment last week too. I thought taking online classes would be awesome! I could work, spend time with my daughter, do school every day, yadda yadda yadda, uh no! It’s not quite working out that way. I am working almost full time right now, which is a problem because I only need to be working part time, but there aren’t enough staff to cover the shift that I work, so I really don’t know how to handle that situation. If I tell my boss I need less hours when he wants me working more hours, he would have to hire somebody to work my shift and I just feel like a big problem employee if that makes sense. Work is just really cutting into my school/study time and stressing me out!! So tonight I’m pulling an all nighter because I am going to Kansas City (my home town) to go see MSSU play some basketball! I have every minute of my weekend planned out! I’m leaving at 8 a.m. and then when I arrive there, a bunch of us are going out to eat before the game, then I’m meeting my lovely friend Keitel at Kona’s bar &grill for some sushi. I literally only have an hour to spend with him, because right after that I’m meeting my best friend and her boyfriend and other people at the Kansas City car show. I’m really excited about that because they show all new cars, some cars that haven’t even came out yet, and you can sit in some of them and take pictures with them. Then immediately after that I am going out for dinner with another best friend of mine. We have known each other our whole lives and we have so much catching up to do because we haven’t seen each other in 2 years! Don’t you love best friends? You can not see them for ever and pick up exactly where you left off? I love it. Then after that I’m going out yet again, with my friend Nick for drinks and what not. And finally, hopefully if I’m not too tired, going to spend some much needed time with someone who I also grew up with whose parents actually babysat me since I was like 6. I haven’t seen that person in like 15 years so that will be interesting! That ends my Saturday night. Then it’s back to Joplin Sunday morning for work! Oh Joy!

Should cars have built in breathalyzers

I read an article about the possibility of all cars in the future having breathalyzers. It immediately made me think of the movie "The 40-year-old Virgin". The car scene where the guy and girl get into her car and she's completely smashed, and asked the guy if he'll blow her breathalyzer so her car will start. What if instead of putting a key in the ignition to start our car we had to blow into a breathalyzer? First of all, think about the older generation. My great-grandmother just bought a brand new car and has no idea what any of the buttons are for, like the cd player, oh and On-Star. She pushed the On-Star button and the lady started talking to her and she just laughed and didn't know how to shut it off. I would imagine it would be quite frustrating for the elders. Especially the ones that drink, haha. If everyone had to use breathalyzers that would mean even the people who didn't drink. At first, most people would have older cars with no breathalyzers in it, and I think that people who pride themselves with not drinking, having to use a breathalyzer would be rather embarrassing for them just because not everyone would be up to date on the new technology and they would stand out and look like an alcoholic. The point of having a breathalyzer in everyone's car is obviously to prevent anyone who has been drinking to drive. The benefits of absolutely no drunk drivers on the road would prevent thousands of deaths a year, and it would cause people to think their actions through more carefully. I would assume the alcohol industry would lose some profits over this. I personally don't really know anyone who drinks and drives, maybe 2 people that I can think of, but that would practically force people to have a "designated driver". The most they drink is maybe a couple margaritas at a restaurant and then drive home. One place where a lot of people drink and drive is at professional sporting events, like baseball, football, and soccer games. There might be some angry fans if they can't have a beer at the game. It definitely seems like when I was in my teen years everyone was partying, there was a lot of drinking and driving going on. Teenagers would rather have fun and risk it than be responsible for their actions. Also, teenagers don't really think anything could happen to them until it does. Then again some people never grow up. I think for teens it would be extremely beneficial to have breathalyzers, just to get it through their head that drinking and driving is not tolerable, and also for people who have a record of DUI's and DWI. As for the rest of us, I don't think its completely necessary.

Vacation

I don’t know about you but I could use a vacation!!

My dream vacation is on an island where I can lay on the beach all day, or go on an island adventure. Why do people go on vacations? There are numerous reasons for a vaca, some include marriage, honeymoons, visiting friends/relatives, getting away from work or relatives, or just going to have some fun. I think vacations are import for a well rounded person because everyone needs balance in their life!

I’m reading an article on the Top 10 Romanic Caribbean Retreats. The first on the list is Kamalame Cay in the Bahamas. It’s a 96 acre island with your own private beach strip outside your villa. It starts at $395. The second one is called Turks & Caicos: Amanyara. This one seems cool because you can go paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming, and they also have live music twice a week. This one starts at $1,600. The third most romantic retreats is at the Antigua: Hermitage Bay. This is a newer resort that flows with gardens or fruit, veggies, and herbs. This starts at $1,400. The next one is Aruba: Bucuti Beach Resort featuring Tara suites and spa. This one looks super fun!! First of all its adult only, and its in walking distance of 20 restaurants overlooking the ocean. They have couples massages- on the beach. They also have horseback riding alongside the beach. Starting rates are $393! Sign me up! Okay, next on the list is Tobago: Villas at Stonehaven. This sounds so beautiful. It’s on a high bluff overlooking the Caribbean and tropical rainforest. This one sounds really personal and romantic because there’s not much to do but go into the rainforest or chill on the beach. It starts at $410. The next one is Jamaica: Round Hill Resort. It’s very stylish, the rooms are designed by Ralph Lauren. There is a lot of beach action here and that’s about it. Starting rate is $579. Next we have Dominica: Rosalie Bay. There are 28 suites which have mountain, ocean, river, or garden views. At this one you can go see the worlds second largest volcanically heated body of water. Sounds interesting. Starting at $250. Continuing on the list we have St. Barts: Le Sereno. This one seems more indoors-y. Not my style. Starting at $680. Ninth on the list is the Grenada: Spice Island Beach Resort: It’s more family oriented with some cruise along the coast. Starts at $618. The last one is the British Virgin Islands: Peter Island Resort. This one is romantic with massages and yoga. Starts at $740.
I liked all the cheaper ones better! They sound way more intimate I guess. Yay, It’s bed time. Maybe I’ll dream about the beach…

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is a historic and adventurous place to be! It’s first visitors were in 1855, and the park sees 3 million people per year. Abraham Lincoln actually signed a the Yosemite Grant in 1864 to help conserve the park. Yosemite is located in California with 1,189 square miles of pure wilderness beauty. This park is any outdoors persons dream park! There are so many things to do! You can go back packing, biking, bird watching, fishing, hiking, horse back riding, picnicking, rock climbing, swimming, rafting, skiing, and ice skating.
Yosemite national park is also known for having natural rock falls. Many things cause rock falls, like glaciation, weathering, and erosions. Rock falls are a very dangerous thing that can’t be prevented or predicted. Over the past 150 years Yosemite Nation Park have recorded at least 600 rock falls. The death toll at the park averages at 10-12 deaths per year. Mostly these deaths are from drowning or falling but rarely from rock fall. Fifteen people have died due to rock falls at Yosemite in the past 150 years.
Scientists just recently started making actual data recordings of the rock fall in 2009 by laser scanning, computer modeling, and monitoring of the cliffs. With hopes to one day be able to predict rock falls. The first recorded rock fall just happened to be the biggest in 2 decades. If scientists could prevent rock falls they could be able to save lives by getting everyone to safety before it happens.

Why is it that when the weather gets nice we get sick!!

I hate being sick! I hate when my daughter is sick even more. She hasnt eatin in 4 days, she vomits if she even takes a bite of anything, she's had a fever of 101 all week, of course she has the cough that keeps her and everyone else up all night. I've missed school and work all week because I can't take her to daycare, which is fine I wouldnt't send her sick if they let me. So I took her to the doctor on Wednesday and they tested for strep, and the flu, both negative. Her doctors nurse is in such a rush and she is so rude to kids. This is what happend: The second the old rude nurse calls us back to get her weight, she rushed Lorelai to take her shoes off and hop on the scale. I've worked in doctor's offices before, I know everyone is in a hurry especially when they are short staffed, but there is no reason to treat kids the way this lady does. So Lorelai takes her shoes off without untying them because the lady is rushing her, and then when Lorelai needed my help to untie them so she can put them back on the nurse made a rude remark "that's why you untie them before you take them off ugh". This is the 3rd time i've had to deal with this nurse and I was about to say something. Finally we make our way to the room and I sit Lorelai up on the table and the nurse wanted to swab her throat to run a strep test. Lorelai has never ever ever had a problem with doctors or shots or swabs or anything, she actually enjoys talking to doctors and making them laugh. So anyway, Lorelai is 5 1/2 and she askes a lot of questions. The nurse told her to open her mouth and say "AH", Lorelai asked so sweetly "can I just open my mouth without saying AH?". The nurse walks out of the door and gets another nurse to hold Lorelai down. At this point Lorelai is very confused and crying and reaching out for me. I was so furious I almost punched the old nurse in her face. SERIOUSLY?! After that she just left the room she knew she better not come around me anymore. I love that doctor because she is really thourough, but I won't let that nurse come around her again. It's pretty obvious that lady needs to work in the ER in texas or something. I'm sure she is good at what she does but she clearly doesn't need to be working with kids! GRR.

Schools are crazy

I read an article at msn.com about this 6 year old boy being admitted into a psych ward for drawing a bad picture that said "i want to die". First of all, the dad is in a different country serving in the war, and secondly, the mother told the school not to admit her 6 year old son. Being a mother of a 5 1/2 year old let me just say that would be SO scary for someone to take my child away for days, against their will, with strangers.. that just makes me want to cry! The story from the mom is that the child plays video games and that's how he know's how to spell that, and she also states how the kid is already seeing a therapist because he has issues because of his dad not being around, and that she would have the kid seen that day if they didn't take him to the psych-ward. The school says that it was out of the mothers hands and they had already called an ambulance. Someone that commented on the article made a point about how schools don't give bullying a second thought or even call the parents about it, but they will send a  child to a psych-ward without consulting with the parent. I disagree completely with the school on this one. Looking at the schools point of view however, that would be a hard descison to make. What is the point at which someone is in real danger for their life? Was the 6 year old really going to kill himself? Couldn't the schools counselor get in touch with the boys therapist to make sure what the mom says is legit?
I guess I can relate to this story. When I was in 8th grade my best friend and I got into a huge fight, splitting our friendship forever. Does everyone know that girls can be vicious?? What happend was I started hanging out with this guy that we both liked. So ya, that was pretty bad of me. To pay me back she told the whole school that I was a lesbian and she told a teacher that I tried killing myself. Everyone had my back about the whole lesbian thing, that i'm indeed straight. After I heard the rumors, I got called into the counselors office and my mom was sitting in there. I don't know why my mom was on their side, she probably just wanted to make sure I was "OK", but sure enough, they sent me to a pysch-ward. My dad was out of town at the time and didn't find out until that night. I remember there was a lot of weird people in there and I was really uncomfortable. My dad flew back once he heard the news and came to my rescue! Apparently it is very hard to take someone out of a pysch-ward before their time is up, but my dad doesn't settle for no. He got me out early the next morning. And guess what, IM ALIVE!! The rest is history..

FAMILY CURSE

Huntington’s Chorea
Huntington’s Chorea Disease (HD) is a hereditary, degenerative brain disorder, which there is no cure for. “HD slowly diminishes the ability to walk, talk, reason, and eventually the person with HD becomes totally dependant on others for their care. Huntington’s Disease profoundly effects the lives of the entire families emotionally, socially, and economically”. “Early symptoms of Huntington's Disease may affect cognitive ability or mobility and include depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, clumsiness, involuntary twitching and lack of coordination. As the disease progresses, concentration and short-term memory diminish and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Walking, speaking and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Death follows from complications such as choking, infection or heart failure.”

Every generation there are a couple people in my family that are born with HD, one of which is my mother. The person who has the disease is actually born with it, but usually they don’t start showing symptoms until mid-life. My mom grew up with a normal life, married my dad when she was 19, went to nursing school, had kids, then decided to be a stay at home wife/mother. In her very early 30’s one of her fingers started twitching all the time, and I guess that’s when they knew she had HD. Currently, my mom is about to have her 47 birthday this month (praise the Lord). Back in September 2010, she went to the hospital with aspiration pneumonia. That was the scariest point in my life up until this moment. Her dad died from aspiration pneumonia, he also had HD, age 57. It was a very serious ordeal. She was in the hospital for 2 months, ICU for a couple weeks, and then rehab for a month. My mom is 5’3, she’s never weighed more than 105 pounds. When she was in the hospital her weight dropped to the 70’s. That was when my family came to reality about how bad she really was, she has to eat soft food and she has to drink everything with thickener. Well, “Chorea” means movement, and that is exactly what she does. She is in constant motion, except in her sleep. Therefore she burns a whopping amount of calories and must consume a whopping amount of calories, which is very hard to do considering the types of foods she is limited to. Her dad, her uncles, and her grandpa also had it. There are various other people in my family that currently have it. Huntington’s Chorea is not openly talked about within my family. It’s like the family curse that will eat you alive if you even speak of it. By the way, Me and my sister have a 50/50 chance of having the disease.

I could probably write a book about my life growing up dealing with this disease, but most of the time I don’t like to think about it because it’s really depressing. The point is everyone will face many horrible realities in life, but we have to keep on moving, striving for happiness.

teenager with medical marijuana

“SCHOOL WON’T ALLOW STUDENT WITH SEIZURES TO TAKE MARIJUANA PILL”

The story is, a teenager in Colorado has a neurological condition called Myaclonus Diaphragmatic, which causes him to have seizures in his chest and throat. The teen was prescribed medical marijuana to help control the symptoms. The school claims that under State Law the teen can’t take the marijuana pill, not even if he keeps it safe in the nurses office.

This just blows my mind. How many teenagers smoke pot?? Probably quite a few! I think that if that one student who was prescribed legal medical marijuana isn’t allowed to take his meds than they should be drug testing all the kids at the school and sending them home too.

The parents tried setting up a plan for the kid to where if he has a seizure he should go home and take the MJ pill, and the school said that it’s okay as long as he isn’t disruptive or showing signs of impairment once returned in school. There seems to be a lot of miscommunication within this situation because the nurse told the boy that it’s ok if he takes the pill and returns to school …as long as the school doesn’t know about it?! Why would it be a secret if the school said it was okay AS LONG as he doesn’t show signs of impairment.

In my option, I’m not sure I’d even tell the school my business. As long as the kid was taking the situation serious and not telling all of his friends that he gets prescribed marijuana, or distributing it to anyone, I would just keep it on the down low.

TATTOOS?

The night I turned 18 I was out driving around Independence, MO with a group of friends, It was mine and my friend Angie's birthdays. None of us had tat's and that night we were on a mission to get them! It was the most random decision i've ever made in my life. I'm a pretty spontaneous person to begin with so none of my friends thought anything of it. Most of my friends were, for my taste, kind of boring, always had to plan every detail of the day, never any random excitement, maybe that's why they liked me? To make a meaningless story even more meaningless, that night we drove around the city, and could not find one tattoo shop open!!!! Okay, so we probably only drove down Noland and into Raytown, but still, our mission failed. And I, to this day, still do not have a tattoo. Sad story huh? Angie, however, called me up two weeks later to say she got a tattoo in Colorado of a lady bug on her foot...

I love love LOVE whole body tattoos on most people. I just love that style. I could never pull it off, but if you have one, more power to you! I watched a couple episodes of a show where this guy travels all over the world to get tattoos. The tattoos he gets are like hard core, hand-poking-needle, have -to- get -initiated -in order- to- get -one, kinda tattoos. This man traveled into the jungle so an original head lord (people who cut off peoples heads) would give him a tattoo which his represented Honor, i believe, because he slit the throat of a hog.

Everyone has their own "tattoo rules" so to say. The ones I've heard my whole life are #1. "make sure the tattoo has meaning!", #2 "Never, under any circumstance get the name of the person you're with tattooed to your body" Apparently doing so means that your relationship with that person is doomed from that point on. #3. "Never get a tattoo when you're drunk!" That's an obvious one. #4. "Make sure you have enough money" I've seen plenty of people sportin half done tats, or not colored in ones, I guess that's your personal opinion. I'd want it all the way done though. #5. "Never get a tattoo in a place someone of importance might see" #6. "Make sure the person that is tatting you DOES NOT make a spelling error!"

I'm still planning on getting a tattoo some day. When I can make my mind up with what I want!

Gangs

Gangs

I was watching the show called Gangland today and that sparked my curiosity about gangs. I did some hours of research about gangs, how they start, what types of symbols they sport, what the initiations to get in and out of gangs, what local gangs we have in Missouri, and how to prevent your child from being in a gang.

Gangs have been around for a very long time. Original gangs however, were formed to protect themselves and their neighborhood. Somehow throughout the years it evolved into mass numbers of people joining gangs for money, drugs, trafficking, pimping, illegal gambling, basically gangs form to create a fast money flow for themselves. Gangs create fear of the community by terrorizing innocent bystanders such as random acts of violence like stabbing, drive-by's, or just picking fights on the streets or at schools.

The leader of the gang is the most powerful, and decides how much crime the gang members will do, how much money flow he wants, he runs the gang. The "hardcore" gang members are the older people in the gang that have seen the most action and can create the most violent gang activity. An "associate" gang member is one that looks up to the hard core gang members, and wants to achieve the hard core status.  The "fridge" gang member is a drifter, that can't seem to commit to the gang. Finally the "wanna-be's" are just kids who aren't really in a gang, but they think gangs are cool and try to mock them.

Gangs will die off if they don't recruit more members. Members will go anywhere to find new, young, people to recruit. Places like schools, sidewalks, malls, stores, parties, ect. Why would anyone want to join a gang?? And why prey on kids and youth to join? There are many different techniques gangs use to build membership. The first way is by seduction. Gang members are known for dressing in a distinctive attire. They wear certain colors, or throw up gang signs, even have gang tattoos, they have money, drugs, girls, and to some kids or youth who have little or no guidance from parents, all of the material things a gang member offers looks appealing.  At parties with youth who drink and get high and want to have the world ,but want it fast and easy, they look to gangs to fulfill the emptiness or thrill they seek in their life. Another tactic used by gangs to recruit new members is call "subterfudge". It basically means that gangs will paint a pretty picture as to what gang-life is like. Some will call it a club or just friends hanging out. Cohersion is a way gangs say "you join the gang or there will be consequences". If someone refuses the offer to join the gang they will beat them, maybe kill them, and their familys. Some people self recruit theirselves because they want to feel protected by enimes or other reasons.

Most importantly we can protect our children by gang prevention. Three ways you can almost assure your child won't join a gang are by stressing manners, making them join a club at school, being involved academically, and just good ole strong parenting.

blog 2 whats goin' on!!

ALL GROWED UP!!
For my second post I’m choosing to write about my little 5 ½ year old daughter and how she is growing up and what all that entails!! I have a beautiful mixed (Latina) daughter who is really, really into art. She literally draws while doing almost everything like watching TV, in the shower, in the car, and at school of course. When I walk into her school the walls on the office are filled with her art work (I think there’s one other kids work on the wall). Also, she loves to ride her bike and play sports. She currently has the Bieber Fever (Justin Bieber)! Watch out it’s pretty contagious!! I now have every song on his CD memorized and we’ve had it for a week. I looked up concert tickets to go see him (for her of couse!) but he is only performing in California and then in other random countries for the next few months. Hopefully by her birthday in September there will be a concert near us!
Okay so Lorelei (yes, I got her name off Gilmore Girls) is about to start school in the fall and I have mixed emotions! I am a single mom. I work, I take 13 hours of school, and I raise my girl. Sometimes I wish that I was married and a stay at home wife just so I can be with my daughter more! Things that worry me about her starting school are: bullies; who is going to pick her up from school when I’m at work( Not the bus!! There are too many crazy people out there that she does not need to come in to contact with without me!) There are so many kidnappings that take place, (I know most of the time its by the kids family) I don’t know how people cope with that! If my daughter were ever to be kidnapped you better believe I would be busting down doors until I found her. Her dad is a cop, so he and I have well trained her about strangers.
Nobody wants their kids to be picked on by bullies! Lorelai is the sweetest most thoughtful girl in the world and probably wouldn’t have the heart to tell a kid to back off just because she wouldn’t want to hurt their feelings. What I’ve told her about bullies is that its not the kid it’s the parents!! I told her to be a role model and show kids how to love one another like God loves us.
She is really trying to learn how to read books (she can read a little) and she’s been practicing basic math. She is always asking me questions about what she needs to do to be prepared for kinder garden, which is cute. What do they do in kinder garden? Play, color, and take naps? Apparently times have changed!

BLOG 2

GOT A TEXT!!

How many of us drive and text these days? I’ll admit that sometimes I’ll check my phone while sitting at a stop light, but while I’m driving, it’s all eyes on the road!! It’s scary to think that even in my own neighborhood while my daughter is riding her bike around the block ( I of course walk with her ) someone might be driving down the road texting not paying attention and slam right over my daughter! Of course she knows to get to the side of the road incase she hears a car, but on hills, when its hard to see the other side of the road, that’s especially dangerous.
I looked up some texting while driving facts and they are outstanding! Between the years 2001 and 2007 16,000 Americans died because they couldn’t put their phone down to drive! When I think about what I’m going to die from, I think of something honorable or maybe old age, but death from texting?! That is just scary! We all need to be more responsible, and if you don’t care about your life enough to shut it up for one minute, then think about the pregnant woman or the little kid in the car next to you. You’re not the only person that is affected by this! Here are some more frightening facts! 80% of car accidents are from distracted drivers (probably texters) and 33% of all accidents are from drunk drivers. So what is the law doing to prevent texting and driving? To break it down, basically it is perfectly legal to use your phone while driving if it’s to dial 911, report a legal activity, to prevent an injury to a person or property, or to talk to a dispatcher. It is okay if you are stopped or parked, and the only people legally able to talk or text is a police officer, ambulance, or fire fighter. By the way this law is for all people who drive, regardless of age. When the texting while driving laws came out I thought it was a little ridiculous, I couldn’t imagine being pulled over for sending a silly text message, but actually is it very important that we have those laws. So now we have laws that are in place to make it illegal to text and drive, how is this changing anything? People still do it. We need to get the word and let our friends and family know that we don’t text and drive and that will they shouldn’t either!! Watch this video, its sad!!
